How to move from translation to practising in Swedish

Separate the content from the test language

The first goal is to understand facts and relationships. Use English or Arabic when necessary to clarify a difficult section. The second goal is to recognise and use the same knowledge in Swedish. A translation is therefore a bridge, not a replacement for practice in Swedish.

Use two steps for each section

First read UHR’s Swedish original and mark words that block understanding. Check their meaning in your strongest language. Close the translation and summarise the content in simple Swedish. Finally, answer Swedish questions about the section without language support.

• Keep the Swedish names of laws, public authorities, and institutions in every set of notes.
• Add a short Swedish explanation beside the translation.
• Write one Swedish question for each central concept.
• Reread the sentence in context instead of memorising an isolated word.

Build a test-relevant glossary

Start with words that actually occur in UHR’s material and official sample questions. Group the glossary by function rather than alphabetically.

• Question words: vilken, vilket, vem, när, varför, and hur.
• Limits and qualifiers: inte, endast, främst, alltid, and bäst.
• Responsibility: beslutar, genomför, granskar, finansierar, and ansvarar för.
• Society terms: grundlag, myndighet, kommun, region, rättighet, and skyldighet.
• Time words: före, efter, under, sedan, and fram till.

Each entry should include a simple Swedish meaning and an example sentence. Avoid long translation lists with no context.

Use audio and text together

UHR provides both text and audio recordings for its study material. Read a short paragraph while listening, pause, and then retell its meaning. Perfect pronunciation is not the objective; the exercise helps you recognise vocabulary and sentence patterns more quickly when reading.

Practise the whole question

Recognising one topic word is not enough. Read from the beginning to the end before looking for a familiar option. Mark negative and comparative words in particular. Then restate what the question asks in a simpler Swedish sentence before selecting an answer.

Reduce language support in stages

• First stage: source in Swedish, explanation in your strongest language, questions in both languages.
• Second stage: source and questions in Swedish, translation only when you become stuck.
• Third stage: complete 10-question sets in Swedish and review afterwards in either language.
• Final stage: complete 60 questions in Swedish in 90 minutes without language support.

Measure the right thing

Count how many errors arise from language and how many from missing society knowledge. If you can explain the fact in another language but miss the Swedish question, work on wording and key terms. If the fact is also missing in your strongest language, return to the relevant section of UHR’s material.
