How to practise regularly for the Swedish citizenship test

Start with the right material

UHR’s study material about Swedish society is the official starting point for preparation. The citizenship test ordinance also lists the broad knowledge areas that may be tested. Use the material as your main source and practice questions to check what you know. Provkollen’s questions are independently written and are not official test questions.

Retrieve the answer before reading the explanation

Research on retrieval practice shows that trying to bring knowledge to mind strengthens memory more than simply reading the same text again. Take a short test without notes. Answer first, then check the correct option and read the explanation even when you were right.

• Explain in your own words why the correct option is correct.
• Briefly explain why at least one other option is wrong.
• Return to the original source if the explanation is still unclear.
• Save the question for a later review instead of repeating it immediately.

Spread sessions across the week

A research synthesis on distributed practice found that review on separate occasions supports long-term retention better than putting the same study time into one long session. A practical routine is 20–30 minutes on four or five days each week. Leave at least one night before reviewing the same difficult material again.

Use four kinds of session

• Source session: read one section of UHR’s material and summarise it without looking.
• Quick test: answer 10 mixed questions and review every explanation.
• Review session: work only with saved questions and earlier mistakes.
• Simulation: occasionally answer 60 questions in 90 minutes to practise stamina and format.

Keep a simple error log

Do not record only the topic you missed. Record the cause: missing factual knowledge, a misunderstood Swedish word, reading too quickly, or confusing two concepts. Match the next session to the cause. A language error calls for vocabulary and reading; a factual error calls for retrieval from the relevant source section.

Interpret practice scores carefully

A high score in a private question bank cannot guarantee an official test result. UHR has not published a passing mark. Track whether you can explain more answers, whether the same errors occur less often, and whether you can complete a timed session without losing accuracy.
