How the society-knowledge test works
The first test on 15 August had about 60 questions and a 90-minute test time. In information updated on 17 August, UHR says the question count and duration for the next sitting will be announced later.

Who can take the test?
The Swedish Migration Agency decided who could take the first test on 15 August 2026. It was intended for people who needed to demonstrate basic knowledge of Swedish society in their citizenship case and could not demonstrate that knowledge in another way.
Registration for the first test was possible only after receiving a letter from the Swedish Migration Agency. UHR has not yet published the registration conditions for the next sitting.
Trial administration and later stages
The 15 August 2026 sitting was a trial administration: the first large-scale use of the questions in a real test setting with the intended group. UHR says that the questions had previously been tested in other ways.
The fee is SEK 2,000, and the provision first applies to tests held in 2027. No fee is charged to a stateless person who has been granted a refugee-status declaration or a travel document by a Swedish public authority. Source: citizenship-test ordinance, section 6 and transitional provision 2.
The citizenship test is being introduced in stages. By 30 September 2026, UHR must submit an updated timetable and cost estimate for the language stages. Reading and listening tests are due no later than 1 October 2027; no fixed date is stated for written and spoken proficiency. Source: government assignment for the language tests.
