How the society-knowledge test works

Who can take the test?
The Swedish Migration Agency decides who may take the August 2026 test. It is for people who need to demonstrate basic knowledge of Swedish society in their citizenship case and cannot demonstrate that knowledge in another way.
Registration was only possible after receiving a letter from the Swedish Migration Agency. The August test is free, but registration is now closed and the sitting is fully booked.
Trial administration and later stages
The August 2026 sitting is a trial administration: the first large-scale use of the questions in a real test setting with the intended group. UHR says that the questions have previously been tested in other ways.
The fee is SEK 2,000, and the provision first applies to tests held in 2027. No fee is charged to a stateless person who has been granted a refugee-status declaration or a travel document by a Swedish public authority. Source: citizenship-test ordinance, section 6 and transitional provision 2.
The citizenship test is being introduced in stages. Reading- and listening-comprehension tests are to be held no later than 1 October 2027. Written and spoken proficiency are to follow as soon as possible; no fixed public date is stated. Source: government assignment for the language tests.
